Geodesic currents has been introduced in 1986 by Bonahon in order to study 3-manifolds. Since then, they have had many applications, in particular to study the geometry of surfaces. In that talk, we will introduce that notion and see the main examples of geodesic currents to have in mind in order to give the ideas behind two notteworthy applications.
