Shrinkwrapping and the taming of hyperbolic 3-manifolds (joint w/ David Gabai)

We give an introduction to the statement and the proof of the tameness
theorem, whose corollaries (combined with work of many other
mathematicians) include the classification of Kleinian groups, and the
proof of the Ahlfors measure conjecture. A key ingredient in the proof is
a new technique for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds,
called shrinkwrapping.
