The rational length spectrum of a hyperbolic manifold M is the set of rational multiples of lengths of closed geodesics in M. When M is a real hyperbolic manifold which is arithmetic of simplest type, lengths of geodesics are directly related to Salem numbers. In this talk I will discuss this connection and some recent results regarding the existence of a given length in the rational length spectrum in terms of the arithmetic data.
