Index of free boundary minimal surfaces in the 3-ball
Jeudi, 3 Octobre, 2019 - 14:00
Résumé :

Recently, following seminal works of A. Fraser and R. Schoen, there has been a renewed interest in minimal surfaces satisfying free boundary conditions. Since such surfaces can be seen as critical points for the area functional, it is of great interest to study the second variation of this functional; this leads to the definition of the index, which aims at quantifying the degree of instability of the surface with respect to the area functional. In this talk, we will discuss some new results and open questions concerning free boundary minimal surfaces in the 3-ball with low index. In particular, we will introduce a new, natural spectral problem for the Jacobi operator on such surfaces.
