We consider the decomposition of a compact-type symmetric space and look
at the factors of rank one. We show that these totally geodesic cycles are
isolated from inequivalent minimal submanifolds of the space. This follows
from a simple argument that comes from Simons' second order equation for
the second fundamental form of a minimal submanifold.
